Our construction project has had a great many folks who have been very generous within their own means to donate to our building project. Just recently, we received a remarkable donation from Curtis and Deborah Kesselring. A direct tie to Cardinal Country, Curt attended Washburn High School for his secondary education where he graduated from us in 1963.
Curt and Deborah Kesselring donated $100,000.00 to our project!! Simply amazing! We cannot thank the Kesselring family enough for their generosity and their investment within our school and the students who learn here!

Our school community is blessed by the generosity of the American Legion Post #12. These folks present our colors at events, provide flags for our classrooms, help kiddos periodically who have a negative lunch balance, the list goes on and one...it is truly amazing how their contributions positively impact us.
Just when you would think that their generosity was predictable--well, they went BIGGER! Our Legion sponsored an activities bus for us! It took months of searching to find one that would meet our budget, and we found a perfect match. Mann Signs did the bus wrap, and we pay homage to the Legion for making this possible on the back of the bus itself.
It's a GREAT day to be a Cardinal when you have American Legion Post #12 on your side! Thank you.

Cardinal Country lost a 1985 graduate, Tom Rothmann. Rothmann, a standout in his baseball skills among his many activities, was an important part of our school's history as is all of our students. Tom's family generously donated to our baseball team to purchase a high-end bat for the team. It's fitting that the bat is being displayed in this picture by Alex Retterath who finished his own high school career in baseball by being named on the Class B Baseball All State Team. Thank you, Rothmann family. We hope that the memories within the many games and fun experiences offer you comfort during this time.

Know this guy? Mike Kamrath is an excellent extension of the school even when he is not teaching. Mr. Kamrath was named the NDAAE Mentor of the year for 2024. Mr. Kamrath is often called upon by various schools around the state to mentor Ag teachers new to the profession whether they are straight out of college or transitioning into teaching from the ranch or the farm. Mike goes above and beyond just mentoring by sharing content, curriculum, and known truths of teaching.
With this honor, Mr. Kamrath will now be considered for the national accolade that parallels this state one in October at National Convention. Here is rooting for the committee to see that Mr. K is clearly the national choice! Congratulations Mr. Kamrath--we are thankful you are a Cardinal.

Exciting News!!

Welcome Back!
Summer has been pretty wild here with the construction project, but I’m very excited to have staff and students return!
If you haven’t already registered, we would appreciate that you do that asap. You can go our website at www.washburn.k12.nd.us and click the “Back to School” button on top. There is a section of required links to include paying your fees online.
So, the million-dollar question is how is school going to look with construction? I have held off as long as I could for this welcome back to know the most up to date logistics. All classroom hallways and classrooms will be accessible and usable for our students. Some aren’t as finished as others, but learning will be able to take place.
The portions of our school that are not finished will have temporary partitions for students and staff to pass safely within the corridors while contractors continue their work.
The lunch room and kitchen are some of the areas not complete. A huge thank you to the City of Washburn and the Legion for granting us permission to utilize their kitchens in Memorial Hall to serve our students. This will feel a bit chaotic at first, but I assure you we are striving for the smoothest transitions possible.
We have two new bus drivers, so you will also be receiving messaging early next week to solidify your pick-up times within the route and who your driver might be.
Though I had envisioned the school year kicking off “cleaner” than it is going to, I can assure you that we have worked hard to try to meet all needs. I ask that you all give us grace as we navigate through the remainder of the project. If you have questions, don’t spin your wheels wondering or surmising—reach out to your teacher, the principals, the front offices, or myself with any of your questions.
Our school community is pretty awesome, and in the near future, our space will be even greater than before. It’s a GREAT Day to be a Cardinal!
~Dr. Penny
