It's been a GREAT year to be a musical Cardinal! Here's the Year in Review!
2023-2024 Governor's Band:
The Washburn High School Band was this year's Governor's Band and was able to perform at the State of The State Address. A distinction given to only one band each year through audition. Because of our performance, DSU offered a $500 scholarship to all current HS band members interested in attending DSU (no matter the major).
2023-2024 Honor Groups:
13 Students selected by audition for Minot State University's Northwest Festival of Music. Alex Seilder (4 year award winner), Chris Mehrer, Shelby Verke (5 year award winner), Amelia Swanson, Hannah Klabunde, Jada Vetter, Vivan Weber, Dara Beck (5 year award winner), Justin Scheresky (4 year award winner), Christine Yunker, Berandt Olafson, Emma Vander Wal (4 year award winner), Matthew Olsen.
3 Students selected by audition for North Dakota Junior High All-State Choir in Fargo. Emily Beehler, Jada Vetter (3 year award winner), Christine Yunker.

McLean County Festival:
Washburn 5th-8th graders participated in 82 events at this festival coming home with 75 superior ratings! Washburn kids had more events than any other school at the festival.

Pep Band: On top of that hectic schedule your kids still made time to perform at a football game, parents' night for volleyball, 8 girls basketball games, and 6 boys basketball games.

Shelby Verke - John Philip Sousa Band Award - Northwest 5 year award winner, 3x UND Honor band, Concordia Honor Band, State Musician also involved in Volleyball, FCCLA (state Leader), Choir and is planning to attend DSU next year.
Dara Beck - Patrick S. Gilmore Band Award - Northwest 5 year award winner, State Musician also involved in Choir, Basketball, Volleyball, FCCLA and is planning to attend NDSU next year.
Chris Mehrer - Patrick S. Gilmore Band Award - Northwest Festival, UND Festival, State Musician also involved in choir and will be attending UND next year.
Matthew Olsen - School Choral Award - Northwest Festival, All-State 2023, State Musician, represented Washburn in Hawaii honor festival, also involved in band, speech, drama, student council and will be attending UND next year.
Music Boosters Group:
Your music boosters group served concessions for home football games, volleyball games, varsity basketball games, and track meets. All money raised by the music boosters went to purchase the new choir risers (with the help of the American Legion), feed students as they traveled to various music performances this year, and scholarships to International Music Camp.
Now we begin planning our next music trip!

The expectation for a musician is high at Washburn but the results speak for themselves!


Students taking DC college classes have some steps to do in order to be registered for classes! Mrs. Leingang is available to help with these steps as well... you just need to ask for help!
1) Apply for admission to BSC as an Early Entry student (if you have never done DC classes before)
2) Check your e-mail for your acceptance and steps to "Claim your NDUS Account." Complete the steps in the e-mail
3) Get the registration course codes from Mrs. Leingang to register for classes.
4) Check the BSC bookstore website for the books you will need for next fall (usually comes out in July)

4th grade (incoming 5th graders) band meeting, Monday, May 13 at 7pm band room
At this meeting you can pick your instrument, signup for band camp, and ask any questions you may have.
Band camp forms are due before June 1st! After that the price of camp increases.


Congratulations to our Cardinals March students of the month, freshman Jada Vetter and seventh grader Rebecca Scheresky! The theme of the month was Accountability. Both do what's asked of themselves while knowing they are responsible for their own actions.



There will be a meeting at 4:00 at the white building on Monday, May 13 for any baseball parents that would be interested in volunteering at the region baseball tournament. There will be signup sheet at that time if anyone would like to help.
The areas that help is needed:

B) Hamburger Feed (Tuesday & Wednesday)
Money to positive promotions.
C) Pitch count (Monday)

Gardner Receives Achievement Award by Sanford.
Aubrey Gardner received a Certificate of Achievement called the Sports Medicine Helper Award. This certificate is given to a High School Student who has shown interest in Sports Medicine and has voluntarily provided assistance in the Athletic Training Room.
Lacey Feist-Young, MSAT, LAT, ATC stated that Aubrey deserves recognition as she has shown dedication to the position, proficiency in hands-on skills, and has learned some of the basics of sports medicine.

Graham took 4th place today in Beulah and qualified for the state golf meet in June.


Roughrider track and field traveled over to Hazen today for a quadrangular invite. Congratulations to Monica for qualifying for State in her 4th event, the 200, and Isaiah for qualifying in the discus! Great job athletes!
